To become a Penguin Figure Skating Club Member, you must first register and pay our yearly dues. Yearly dues include access to our club events and activities, clinics and education, testing, holiday shows, and brings forth a teammate environment in a very solo sport.
Many people choose to start with the Learn to Skate program offered through our rink, The Steel Ice Center. Following that, to further pursue the sport of figure skating, private lessons are offered through our coaches and are essential to your skaters growth and their ability to test and compete. Skaters are taught basic skills that advance throughout levels as practice goes on bringing them to the more advanced levels they desire to compete at and the skills the wish to achieve.
Competitions are offered throughout the year, but often fall within the figure skating comp season, January through July. To register for a competition, you must first discuss competing with your skaters coach to discuss open competitions and what that all entails. Your coach will devise a plan for you, including the choreography of a your skaters figure skating routine, and guide you along the process.
Testing is done to move forward in the world of figure skating . There are levels in figure skating and testing allows you to move up to the next level and compete at that level. Once you test out of a level you cannot go back to that level. That means your skill set it now higher then what that level requires.
Off ice training is very important for figure skaters. Yoga, stretching, ballet, and figure skating workout programs are what should be followed for off ice training. You can ask your coach to help you come up with the right off ice training plan for your skaters and attend our complimentary off ice training classes for our members only.
It is very important to participate in clinics and educational opportunities offered through our club. These classes will help your skater fine tune their current skills while learning new ones that will benefit their skating skills.
Figure skating is a sport that requires clothes that you are able to stretch and move in. You can find figure skating attire online and also in our online store. It should be soft, breathable, warm, and often comes in a pair with pants and a jacket. You should also purchase figure skating socks, gloves, and outerwear to keep your skaters warm. Wearing a helmet is recommended when you first begin classes.
